Germany’s Federal Prosecutor’s Office has arrested former Federal Intelligence Service (BND) chief August Hanning on suspicion of espionage, treason and obtaining classified information for a foreign power. Hanning, who headed the BND from 1998 to 2005, is accused of using classified intelligence to prepare an analysis for a foreign intelligence service and maintaining contact with another foreign spying service. Prosecutors have not disclosed which foreign powers are allegedly involved.

Authorities also arrested former BND employee Manfred D, who is accused of providing Hanning with around 2,000 classified documents in exchange for money. He faces allegations of aiding and abetting attempted treason and treasonous espionage. According to German media reports, Hanning was arrested at his home in Nordwalde near Münster, while Manfred D was detained in Bavaria.

Hanning is expected to appear in court on Wednesday, with Manfred D due to appear on Tuesday. The allegations remain subject to judicial proceedings. The investigation could become one of Germany’s most significant recent espionage cases, involving allegations of the transfer and use of sensitive intelligence by a former head of the country’s foreign intelligence service.

The Human Frontline continues to follow the case as investigators and prosecutors disclose further details.

No sides. No borders. Just the truth.
