The Human Frontline

Yemen’s internationally recognised government has announced a major military campaign aimed at retaking territory controlled by the Houthi movement, marking a significant escalation in a civil war that had remained largely frozen for several years. The announcement by Rashad al-Alimi, chairman of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, comes after weeks of renewed and increasingly intense fighting across several strategic areas of the country.

Government forces have reported advances along Yemen’s western coast and around Taiz, where fighting has intensified in recent weeks. The government said its forces had regained control of the Dhubab district near the strategically important Bab al-Mandeb Strait, although the Houthis disputed the claim.

On Monday, Yemeni government forces also announced what they described as a “strategic” offensive aimed at Sanaa, Yemen’s capital, which has remained under Houthi control since 2014. The latest escalation is reshaping a conflict that had seen a prolonged period of relative military stalemate. Renewed fighting around key roads, coastal areas and strategic routes could further deepen Yemen’s humanitarian crisis and increase displacement among civilians.

The developments also carry wider regional implications, given Yemen’s location along vital international shipping routes and the continued involvement of regional powers in the conflict. As government forces seek to expand their control and the Houthis attempt to maintain their positions, Yemen faces the prospect of another major phase of warfare — with civilians once again bearing much of the cost.

The Human Frontline continues to follow the developments, focusing on the people and consequences behind the conflict.

No sides. No borders. Just the truth.
