Trump says proposed Washington arch could become military complex

US President Donald Trump says his proposed 76-metre (250ft) triumphal arch in Washington, DC, could be turned into a military complex for storing and deploying large numbers of drones, with space for snipers and ammunition.

Trump said on Sunday that he agreed to the change after what he described as a “strong request” from the US military. He also referred to national security concerns but did not give details of any specific threat.

The arch is planned near Arlington Memorial Bridge, between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. The proposed design includes a winged figure, two eagles and four lions, with the words “One Nation Under God” and “Liberty and Justice for All” inscribed in gold.

Military veterans have taken legal action against the project, arguing that it would affect the historic view between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. They also argue that the project needs approval from Congress.

Aviation experts have raised safety concerns because the proposed site is close to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The National Capital Area Planning Commission approved the site and preliminary plans in July. The project has not yet received final approval.

The Pentagon said it had no additional comment beyond Trump's statement. The White House also declined to provide further information.
